Over the past three weeks, we have been watching “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”.
Edmund, as we have seen, has snuck off to see the Witch alone. She is upset that he didn’t bring his siblings, so she sends her wolf troop to hunt them down. Pursued by wolves, the Peter, Susan, Lucy, and the beavers manage to safely cross a thawing river, leaving the Witch no way to reach them. Arriving at Aslan's camp, they encounter Aslan, who is revealed as a huge and noble lion. Aslan promises to help Edmund in any way he can.
Later, two wolves ambush Lucy and Susan while they are playing by the river. When Peter intervenes, the wolf pack leader attacks him, and Peter kills him with his sword. Some of Aslan's troops follow the other wolf back to the witch's camp and rescue Edmund.
Watch closely and see how the Witch and Aslan both respond to Edmund’s betrayal and rescue.

Discuss the following questions with the students in your house. Be intentional about creating conversation - who knows where it will lead!
Ice Breaker Questions:
(The icebreaker questions will hopefully help everyone feel comfortable with one another.)
1. If you were in the "Miss America" talent competition, what would your talent be? (Note: both guys & girls have to answer this question!)
2. What is your favorite animal? List three adjectives to explain your choice.
Digging Deeper Questions:
(During the “Digging Deeper” section, make an effort to create a conversation in your family. Feel free to ask additional questions about the subject, but try to stay on topic.)
3. At the beginning of the video clip we see Aslan talking to Edmund about what has happened in the past. Do you think you would have a hard time forgiving Edmund for betraying the rest of his siblings? Why or why not?
4. Aslan brings Edmund over to the rest of the children and says, “What’s done is done” and encourages them to never speak about what has happened again. Today we say use the phrase, “Forgive and Forget.” Do you think we really live that out? Why do you think that?
5. The Bible says, like Aslan, that God forgives our sins and removes them from us. In Psalm 103:12 it says, “He (God) has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.” Do you think people live like their sins are truly forgiven, or do we live lives full of guilt?
6. The children then prepare for a big battle with the white witch. We see them practicing archery and swordsmanship. In our everyday lives how do we practice for the “battles” that we will face? (Putting truth into our minds through scripture and prayer, Having good friends around us, Asking for advice from others, Leaning into your small group)
7. According to the White Witch’s traditions blood is needed for repayment – and she’s looking to Edmund. Who steps in his place? (Aslan)
8. Knowing that Aslan represents God and Jesus, how does this sound familiar to Jesus’ death on the cross? (He took our place, His blood was shed for our sin)
9. Read Matthew 27:35-44:
“35-40After they had finished nailing him to the cross and were waiting for him to die, they whiled away the time by throwing dice for his clothes. Above his head they had posted the criminal charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews. Along with him, they also crucified two criminals, one to his right, the other to his left. People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament: "You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days—so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you're really God's Son, come down from that cross!" 41-44The high priests, along with the religion scholars and leaders, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him: "He saved others—he can't save himself! King of Israel, is he? Then let him get down from that cross. We'll all become believers then! He was so sure of God—well, let him rescue his 'Son' now—if he wants him!”
10. Why do you think Aslan, like Jesus, allowed himself – even though he knew he had the power – to be subjected to humiliation? (even though he was able to get out of this – they knew the only way to be set free was through their blood)
Pray together.

The Chronicles of Narnia (4 of 5)
9.22.2009
To start you off today, I would like to give a brief recap of what has happened up to this point in our story. Peter, Susan, and Lucy are currently on the move in search of Aslan and his army because the White Witch is holding their brother, Edmond captive.
Mr. and Mrs. Beaver are leading the way to Aslan’s camp, in hopes that Aslan can help retrieve Edmond from the evil Witch. In the meantime, the White Witch is chasing after Edmond’s siblings in an attempt to capture and kill them. Watch now as the beavers and humans have an encounter with the Witch’s wolf pack.
Begin clip at 1:11:44. End clip at 1:26:08
(After you watch the clip together discuss the following questions as a family.)
1. If you had to describe yourself as one of the characters in today’s Narnia clip, who would you be and why?
2. At the beginning of the clip, Peter, Susan, Lucy and the beavers were in a pretty dangerous situation when the frozen waterfall broke open and they were swept downstream. What is the most dangerous situation you’ve ever been in?
3. After the humans and beavers get out of the ice-cold water, Mrs. Beaver say’s, “I don’t think you’ll be needing those coats anymore”. Why do you think she says that? What do you think is causing the weather to change from always being winter to now turning into spring? (Possible Answer: Because Aslan is taking control of Narnia which is causing the Witch to lose her power.)
4. Read Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,
who have been called according to his purpose.”
5. When we read this scripture, how can we relate it to the Narnia clip we just saw? (Possible Answer: Although many things seem to be going wrong (Edmond is missing, the children are in complete danger, they don’t know who they can trust, etc.), Aslan has a plan that will end up with an amazing ending.)
6. What confidence does Romans 8:28 give you about events that occur in your own life? Do you say and believe the same thing when bad times come your way? Why or why not?
7. Why do you think the writer of the Narnia series chose the character of Aslan to be in the form of a lion?
8. Do you know of any scriptures where God is compared to a lion? (Answer: Yes, in Revelation Chapter 5:5, Jesus is call the “Lion of Judah”)
9. Did you know that throughout the Bible, lions represent royalty, majesty, authority, invincibility, fearlessness and bravery. In fact ‘lion’ and ‘lions’ are mentioned more than 100 times in Scripture!
10. Knowing this fact, do you see a comparison between Aslan and God? How do you think the two relate to each other? (Possible Answer: While bad things can happen to us and around us, God is still accomplishing His perfect plan – just like bad things are allowed to happen in Narnia, but Aslan has a plan to save his people.)

The Chronicles of Narnia (part 2)
Today we continue our series on “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. The youngest of four children, Lucy, has already entered the land of Narnia and is excited for the opportunity to share this magical land with her brothers Peter and Edmond and her older sister Susan.
Being their very first time in Narnia, Peter and Susan follow Lucy’s lead as she takes them to the house of Mr. Tumnas, the faun. To their horrifying astonishment, Mr. Tumnas is gone, his house has been ransacked and a note has been left behind that spells out the reason for his arrest – “betraying the White Witch and communing with a daughter of Eve.
Although Edmond is physically with his siblings at the time they find Mr. Tumnas missing, his mind is wandering to be in another part of Narnia – he would do anything to once again be with the White Witch.
Having already spent time with her, Edmond craves to meet with her a second time and will do anything he can to gain her approval. He also yearns for more of his favorite dessert, the dessert the White Witch magically created for him during their previous encounter - Turkish Delight.
Watch now as we join, Lucy and her brothers and sister immediately after leaving the house of Mr. Tumnas. Please enjoy The Chronicles of Narnia.
(Start DVD at 44:20 - End clip at 1:01:12)
Use the video and questions below to begin a discussion with the students in your house.
1. When the Beaver hands Lucy her handkerchief and asks the humans to follow him to “safer quarters”, both Lucy and Peter are quick to trust the beavers. Why do you think they trust him when they have just met him?
2. What about Susan, she is much more hesitant. Why do you think this is?
3. As for Edmond, he follows along with Susan in not trusting the beaver. Do you think Edmond's reasoning for not trusting the two beavers is the same as Susan’s? Why or why not?
4. If you were put in their situation, would you be more like Lucy and Peter or Susan and Edmond? Why?
5. If the beavers were actual people, who in your own life do they remind you of? And what kind of characteristics do they have they cause you to say that?
6. While sitting in the beaver’s house, Edmond asks “Who is Aslan”? How do the beavers describe what he’s like? (Answers: “King of the whole wood”, “The real king of Narnia”)
7. When you listened to the beavers and the fox talk about Aslan, what is the impression you got from them? Did they act like they respected him? Why do you think that is?
8. If you were to compare the character, Aslan to Jesus/God, how would you say they are similar?
9. If a stranger came up to you some Sunday at church and out of the blue, asked “Who is God?”, and you had to personally give them an answer - how would you explain God to someone who had absolutely no idea?
10. Read Colossians 1:16-17
“16For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
11. How does this scripture about Jesus remind you of what Aslan is like to the people of Narnia?
12. Read Psalm 97:3-6
“3 Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. 4 His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. 5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth.6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.”
13. What were you taught that God was like when you were younger? Why do you think very few people would “explain” God like he is explained in Psalm 97?
14. So after watching the movie and discussing, what are a couple of things you’ve learned or discovered?

Chronicles of Narnia (part 1)
We recently started a series in both HSM and MSM based on the Chronicles of Narnia. Through this movie there are so many symbols that relate to values that Jesus described in The Bible. The best way for you and your family to glean from this series is to watch the movie clips and discuss the questions together.
For week one begin the movie at 24:35 and stop at 38:06. Use the questions below to discuss topics with your family.
1) How did Lucy’s siblings react when she first told them about Narnia? (They thought she was pretending, or even lying.) Why do you think Lucy’s brothers and sister reacted like that?
2) After Lucy returns from Narnia the first time - Peter, Susan, and Edmond checked the wardrobe for an entrance into Narnia.
a) Why do you think they couldn’t find a way into Narnia? (This is an opinion question, no right or wrong answer, so try and get many different students’ opinions).
3) In the movie, when Edmond first enters Narnia he says “Lucy… I think I believe you now.”
a) Can you think of a time when you saw or heard something, but had a hard time believing it was real? (Maybe it was too good to be true, unreal, or too hard to handle)
b) Why do you think we have such a hard time believing?
4) When Edmond enters Narnia the first time he looks back to make sure the way out is still there. Are you more of a “looking back” or a “rushing forward” person?
a) Why do you see yourself that way?
5) While sitting with the professor, Peter and Susan had an interesting conversation.
a) How do you think their perspective changed after talking to the professor?
b) Has there been a time or event that changed your perspective and/or faith? Can you explain what happened?
6) The professor shares with Peter and Susan 3 possible options to why Lucy is talking about this magical land. What are they? (Answers: 1. She’s mad (crazy) 2. She’s lying 3. She’s actually telling the truth)
7) Read John 20:29 – Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
a) Why do some people refuse to believe until they have a personal experience?
b) Why do you think some people refuse to be trusting and have faith in something that they can’t touch, see, or smell?
c) With Susan and Peter, why do you think Edmond denied being in Narnia?
d) Why is it that some people can have a “Narnia-type experience” with God yet they still come back and act like Edmond (deny what they experience)
i. What are the characteristics that allow some people to respond like Lucy (authentically believe)?
Big Question: What are some ways you can stretch your faith this week?
